2024 And The Jackets Record Book

As I work toward getting info into the Jackets record book…I keep finding facts that are a big interest. I’ll be adding to the record book for several weeks.

One statistic I found really interesting. As we all know, Dave Campbells’ Texas Football has become the bible for Texas High Schools..My collection goes back to 1963!

In this years issue, which came out in July list their top 25 teams ranked in each division. In 3A Division 1….Orange Grove, Randolph, and Goliad were listed in the top 25. Llano was not ranked in the top 25. Llano beat all three of those ranked schools. When the Jackets got beat by Edna, there were only 8 teams left playing football in Texas 3A Division 1!!

I looked back on the Jacket teams of 2020, and 2022…both 13-1 seasons. Using the same measuring stick…both of those teams beat 2 top 25 Texas Football ranked schools. Llano’s 2024 team was pretty special. 12-2 was a great season. The Harris Rating comes out every Tuesday, for those of you that love statistics. Van Harris picks the point spread of every game in the State each week. His picks have averaged for decades of over 88% correct! I like it when he misses Llano. He missed three games of Llano this year. He picked Llano to beat Comanche. And he picked both Jarrell and Goliad to beat Llano. You can receive his subscription, or check with me and I’ll get you his address.

Just to bring a few updates on individuals: RJ ended his Jacket career ranked # 4 all time catches with 90. The 90 catches ties Hunter Ratliff from the 2002 season. 22 yars ago. Only the great Quincy Prince, Michael White and Will Carpenter had more catches in their careers.

RJ caught 49 passes this season, ranked 4th best for a single season. ( RJ had 41 catches last season) And his 678 yards this season ranks # 8 all time for a single season. His 7 catches for 98 yards against Goliad goes into the record book.

There had to be some great pass blocking for that to happen. Thank you Will Landers, Thomas Calderon, Marshall Henderson, Rice Thomas, Isaiah Hernandez and Jaxon Johnson.

Trey has made the record book, but today I have him with 1,652 yards rushing for 2024. 6th best single season ever. And Trey had 172 points scored in a season, with 28 rushing TDs. # 2 All Time, just behind the great James Grantham who had 176 points in 1995. Will be re-adding but I have Trey with 3,085 total career rushing yards and 196 total career points.

Trey had 4 catches for 143 yards against Randolph. And his 99 yard run against Goliad is a school record. Trey had 14 runs in 14 games of over 20 yards, averaging 40.7 yards a run. He also had 6 runs of 19 yards. His season average was 6.1 yards per carry.

Please go to the record book and help me to not miss anything, because I always do….also have work to do on past Jacket records…they keep coming in. See you in a few days. Email me at mvirdell@virdellrealestate.com
