PLAY TO WIN by Mikel Virdell

Recording the History of the Fighting Llano Yellow Jackets

Few Notes of great interest. Texas Football magazine ranks every UIL football school at the end of each season. They take the last six years for the study, and includes 2024 season. There are 1,216 school ranked. All classifications and divisions are included. The rankings include but not limited to won-loss record over the 6 year period, state champions, playoff records., and others. Each category is given a point system, thus at the end you have the highest ranked schools, and on down the list of 1,216.

Out of 1,216 schools, Llano was ranked 114. That places the Yellow Jackets in the top 10% in the state of all schools. 6AAAAAA thru Class A. But more impressive even that is Llano is ranked # 10 in Class 3AAA, Division 1. Our 58-17 record over that 6 year period certainly is the best in the history of LHS.

The success of the Yellow Jackets since the arrival of Head Coach and Athletic Director Matt Green in 2017 includes an over all record of 70-28 over the 8 years. Coach Green has coached in Llano longer than any other coach in history. And maybe the surprise was this past season, 2024. While Llano whipped out a 12-2 record, all the while of not even being picked to win our District. As mentioned before, Llano beat three teams in the Texas Football pre-season top 25, while not being in the top 25!

Coach Matt Green has won more games than any Coach in history. He has won more play off games, and coached more games also. His winning percentage is also the highest of any Llano coach.

The records of most all Llano coaches in our history are in the record book. Go to…. Play to Win, by Mikel Virdell, and you will find about 90 different categories of school records. When you see errors or ommissions, please let me know.

SA Randolph, Orange Grove, and Goliad were all picked ahead of Llano. Llano has now gone undefeated in District play 4 of the past 5 years.

Still have a long way to go on entries in the School Record book Many of you that have sent me great information, please give me a little more time. I’m working on it. It will get vetted and entered.

The 2024 Yellow Jacket 12-2 record banner has been ordered. As soon as it comes in, it will be hanging in the Llano River Creamery…should be up in a few weeks.
