PLAY TO WIN by Mikel Virdell

Recording the History of the Fighting Llano Yellow Jackets

Few Notes of great interest. Texas Football magazine ranks every UIL football school at the end of each season. They take the last six years for the study, and includes 2024 season. There are 1,216 school ranked. All classifications and divisions are included. The rankings include but not limited to won-loss record over the 6 year period, state champions, playoff records., and others. Each category is given a point system, thus at the end you have the highest ranked schools, and on down the list of 1,216.

Out of 1,216 schools, Llano was ranked 114. That places the Yellow Jackets in the top 10% in the state of all schools. 6AAAAAA thru Class A. But more impressive even that is Llano is ranked # 10 in Class 3AAA, Division 1. Our 58-17 record over that 6 year period certainly is the best in the history of LHS.

The success of the Yellow Jackets since the arrival of Head Coach and Athletic Director Matt Green in 2017 includes an over all record of 70-28 over the 8 years. Coach Green has coached in Llano longer than any other coach in history. And maybe the surprise was this past season, 2024. While Llano whipped out a 12-2 record, all the while of not even being picked to win our District. As mentioned before, Llano beat three teams in the Texas Football pre-season top 25, while not being in the top 25!

Coach Matt Green has won more games than any Coach in history. He has won more play off games, and coached more games also. His winning percentage is also the highest of any Llano coach.

The records of most all Llano coaches in our history are in the record book. Go to…. Play to Win, by Mikel Virdell, and you will find about 90 different categories of school records. When you see errors or ommissions, please let me know.

SA Randolph, Orange Grove, and Goliad were all picked ahead of Llano. Llano has now gone undefeated in District play 4 of the past 5 years.

Still have a long way to go on entries in the School Record book Many of you that have sent me great information, please give me a little more time. I’m working on it. It will get vetted and entered.

The 2024 Yellow Jacket 12-2 record banner has been ordered. As soon as it comes in, it will be hanging in the Llano River Creamery…should be up in a few weeks.

2024 And The Jackets Record Book

As I work toward getting info into the Jackets record book…I keep finding facts that are a big interest. I’ll be adding to the record book for several weeks.

One statistic I found really interesting. As we all know, Dave Campbells’ Texas Football has become the bible for Texas High Schools..My collection goes back to 1963!

In this years issue, which came out in July list their top 25 teams ranked in each division. In 3A Division 1….Orange Grove, Randolph, and Goliad were listed in the top 25. Llano was not ranked in the top 25. Llano beat all three of those ranked schools. When the Jackets got beat by Edna, there were only 8 teams left playing football in Texas 3A Division 1!!

I looked back on the Jacket teams of 2020, and 2022…both 13-1 seasons. Using the same measuring stick…both of those teams beat 2 top 25 Texas Football ranked schools. Llano’s 2024 team was pretty special. 12-2 was a great season. The Harris Rating comes out every Tuesday, for those of you that love statistics. Van Harris picks the point spread of every game in the State each week. His picks have averaged for decades of over 88% correct! I like it when he misses Llano. He missed three games of Llano this year. He picked Llano to beat Comanche. And he picked both Jarrell and Goliad to beat Llano. You can receive his subscription, or check with me and I’ll get you his address.

Just to bring a few updates on individuals: RJ ended his Jacket career ranked # 4 all time catches with 90. The 90 catches ties Hunter Ratliff from the 2002 season. 22 yars ago. Only the great Quincy Prince, Michael White and Will Carpenter had more catches in their careers.

RJ caught 49 passes this season, ranked 4th best for a single season. ( RJ had 41 catches last season) And his 678 yards this season ranks # 8 all time for a single season. His 7 catches for 98 yards against Goliad goes into the record book.

There had to be some great pass blocking for that to happen. Thank you Will Landers, Thomas Calderon, Marshall Henderson, Rice Thomas, Isaiah Hernandez and Jaxon Johnson.

Trey has made the record book, but today I have him with 1,652 yards rushing for 2024. 6th best single season ever. And Trey had 172 points scored in a season, with 28 rushing TDs. # 2 All Time, just behind the great James Grantham who had 176 points in 1995. Will be re-adding but I have Trey with 3,085 total career rushing yards and 196 total career points.

Trey had 4 catches for 143 yards against Randolph. And his 99 yard run against Goliad is a school record. Trey had 14 runs in 14 games of over 20 yards, averaging 40.7 yards a run. He also had 6 runs of 19 yards. His season average was 6.1 yards per carry.

Please go to the record book and help me to not miss anything, because I always do….also have work to do on past Jacket records…they keep coming in. See you in a few days. Email me at mvirdell@virdellrealestate.com

12-2 Season Brings Rewards

The 2024 Llano Yellow Jackets season was a wonderful success. The third winningest season in school history will live in the minds and hearts of these players forever. And most important, the seniors leave not only with just the records, but memories that will be talked about 50 years from now.

What were the best three year periods in our schools history? Well, we have them right here. The seniors, many were on the team for three years…and most all were on the sidelines when they were sophomores and Llano was playing in the quarterfinals in 2022.

THREE YEAR PERIOD NUMBER OF WINS TOTAL WINS

2020-21-22 13,8,13 34

2022-23-24 13,5,12 30

1995-96-97 9,8,11 28

1994-95-96 10,9,8 27

The pride that the players will carry forward comes down to statistics many times. The 2024 offense had 5,573 total yards in their 14 games played,. An average of 398 yards per game. That production on offense is winning football. And those yards sometimes come hard. And the hardest comes from players many of us never notice, much less know their names. Working hard in obscurity takes a special player. Just doing ones job sometimes can make for a long season. But, as I have said before, when you have a running back as good as Trey Mote who can take advantage of great blocking. And know for sure that Trey knows, but also Coaches know.

It is my understanding, and it may be wrong, but All District teams are chosen by “other Coaches”…not Llano Coaches. Opposition Coaches know who is good. And they know their names.

Over 5,000 yards in offense did not come by accident. And to prove that Coaches were paying attention, let’s look at the players that block for a living.

FIRST TEAM ALL DISTRICT POSITION CLASSIFICATION

Will Landers Center Senior

Cason Stephenson Offensive Line Junior

Jaxon Johnson Offensive Line Senior

Konrad Zwicke Tight End Junior

Cole Kennedy Newcomer of the Yr. Sophomore (Blocking back, tight end)

SECOND TEAM ALL DISTRICT

James Greenwood Offensive Line Junior

Zach Driskel Offensive Line Junior

HONORABLE MENTION

Ethan Griego Offensive Line Junior

It is comforting to know that the Jackets will return six very good football players that know how to block. In a few days I will talk and recognize the skill players and their rewards, with statistics. Still a long way to go with putting in numbers into the record book…have put some in…but many to go. Please go to the record book and help with additions and corrections. It’s on the internet. Jackets 12-2 Magical Season

A season when you were not picked to win your district…a season when star power was lacking…a season when you fall behind in 6 games, by as many as 19 points in a state play off game and still come back to win…a season when injuries put starters out for extended periods….all turned out far better than many could have ever imagined. A 12-2 season, the third most wins in a season in the history of the school…the word magical does not say enough….but this team will have bragging rights for decades going forward…a team that narrowed the field down to 8 teams before being eliminated.

The Yellow Jackets Friday night played a less than a perfect game against #2 ranked Edna. The five turnovers would have sealed the game for most teams. Yet in the third quarter Llano scored making the score 28-14. Hundreds of Llano Llano fans had seen this before. A comeback by a group of young men that never quit…did not know they might be out talented, and maybe even faster and quicker. The Jackets just kept fighting…all the way to the final whistle. The final score of 41-14 will be long forgotten, but this season and even this game will be apart of the memories of these players forever. For so many of us, it was magical.

To point out just a few of the high points of the Edna game….Llano was forced to punt 5 times for an average of 34 yards per punt…Junior Jose Sillas has been consistent all year…averaging 39.2 yards per kick, second highest average in the history of LHS. Jose ‘s name is in the LHS RECORD BOOK.

The Jacket defense has been excellent all season long. The Jackets forced Edna to punt 5 times. Seniors Michael Logan, and Logan Van Pelt in the trenches had great seasons. Logans’s interception in the third quarter stopped a 9 play drive of the Cowboys. Having seniors Tate Morgan at linebacker, and Carter Bickett ( 3 interceptions for the season) at safety was as good as it gets. Tate was ahead in Max Prep state wide in tackles as of last week. Wesley Whitaker played a very valuable role at linebacker and moving over to cover receivers. Isaiah Hernandez was a valuable player also playing in the down positions, and on special teams. Senior Heith Rhea had a great season, after missing much of the season. But his play on both sides of the ball cannot be dismissed. So great to have him back the second part of the season. And enough will never be said of the play of senior Colton Bailey. Always making the big plays. And his interception in the second quarter against Edna will be long remembered. Zach Horton played hard. And nothing harder at times than coving punts and kick offs. His always 100% effort was noticed. A great team player. That’s what a Yellow Jacket is!

Senior Trey Mote also will be listed several times in the record book. Second most points in a season (172 points and 28 TDs) only behind James Grantham’s 176. 1,652 rushing yards…# 6 all time. I will be working on the RECORD BOOK for several weeks. Such as Trey’s career totals still to be entered.

This gives me the opportunity to mention to you all….please email me to make sure all records get entered. I miss a lot. But welcome your additions and corrections. The record book belongs to you. Many have said they can’t find it….Easy way is to just type in PLAY TO WIN, by mikel virdell…stroll down to Yellow Jackets Records….now over 90 categories….also pretty sure it is on the LHS web page.

One thing I think I have got correct….but please check:

Coach Matt Green: 8 seasons….70-28 record…13 play off wins…winning percentage of .714….No one else is even close. Three best seasons ever for LHS. Only Coach John Baskin coached 8 seasons and finished with 48 wins.

Have all kinds of data to enter into the records….RJ Coplin will see his name many times…as will additions for quarterback Luke Davis. All a work in progress.

When the All District team is announced, I’ll publish…..and the ones that never see their names….the offensive line and other blockers unless they get a penalty. Offense next week…

But for all that’ said and done….12-2 was MAGICAL.

Jackets Shock Goliad in Heartstopper

The Llano Yellow Jackets shocked the heavily favored Goliad Tigers Friday night at Ferris Complex in San Antonio 30-29 with only 17 seconds left on the clock. The Regional game will go down in LHS history as one of the most exciting and heart stopping football games of all times.

The heart stopping for this observer was not just the winning of the football game, but the details in the makings of the last 8 minutes of the game. Never has so much happened in such a short period of time.

But I digress. Let’s go to the beginning. Goliad kicked off to the Jackets. Sophomore Cash Lynch returned the ball 12 yards to the 30 yard line. First play…sophomore quarterback Luke Davis threw to senior wide receiver RJ Coplin to the outside, and RJ’s speed got 44 yards out of the play. Llano first down on Goliad’s 23 yard line. End of series. Luke threw 3 incomplete passes and the Jackets turned the ball over to the Tigers.

Tigers first down on the 28 yard line. First play….72 yards and a burst of speed….Tigers take a 7-0 lead. Next play…Llano fumbles. Next play…on the Jacket 34 yard line…34 yards and a burst of speed….Tigers 13-0…thank goodness to junior JD Friday’s blocking of the extra point.

The Jackets next possession was some better. Five plays. Luke runs twice for 18 yards. Senior running back Trey Mote picks up 6 more. Luke then throws a strike to junior wide receiver Graham Prokop for 11 yards and a first down. On the Tigers 27 yard line, Luke throws the rare interception.

Holy Cow, here comes that slot T offense again. But the Jackets are slowly getting their footing against this very tough running game. Strong tackles by Gavin Hays and Tate Morgan. Junior Jose Sillas at linebacker makes several stops. Carsten Hays is getting out of the blocks, and making stops. But Goliad has a strong 8 play drive down to the 41 Jacket yard line. There we make our stand, and the Tigers are forced to punt. But he Jackets stall. Other than a good catch by senior Heith Rhea and a 10 yard gain, Llano’s Sillas punts. Quarter Ends….

Goliad has the ball starting on the 39 yard line. Five plays later they are standing in the end zone. 19-0. But take note. Goliad decides to go for two points. The Tigers have yet to throw a pass. But this play, they throw a very short lob pass…and the ball falls threw the receivers hands….19-0.

The awaking of the ole bear…I mean Jackets…RJ takes the kick off up to the 31 yard line. 10 yards for a first down with Luke hitting Trey. Trey four runs for 11 yards…Luke hits Cash for 9 yards and a first down. Another run by Luke to the 35 yard line. A 15 yard penalty on the Tigers. 20 yard run by Trey, and the final 4 yards for Llano’s firsts score. The score is 19-7 with 6:42 left in the first quarter.

Llano attempts an on side kick, but the Tigers recover in good field position. First play…27 yards to the Llano 30 yard line. A pass! 12 yards and another first down. The Jackets hold and on fourth down the Tigers kick a 27 yard field goal. Senior Carter Bickett at safety, and junior Austin Humphries are tightening up the defense. Senior Logan Van Pelt is learning the blocking technique of the Tigers. The score is now 22-7. Take Note: Llano takes the kick off and Cash brings it to the 36 yard line. Luke completes three straight passes….20 yards to RJ…9 more to RJ…and a four yard completion to junior tight end Konrad Zwicke. But at the five yard line…the drive goes no further…so the Jackets try their own field goal by junior Francisco Parravano with seconds left in the half. Field goal easily blocked…easily blocked…it looked like 3 or 4 Tigers were at the point of the kick before the ball was even set down…half time…22-7.

The third quarter was nearly a sleeper. Each team traded punts. Good cover by Llano with senior Wesley Whitaker and junior Niko Arms down field covering. A Llano fumble and a 15 yard penalty actually work in the Jackets favor. Now the Tigers fumble. Luke runs for 15 yards. Jose catches a 7 yard third down pass from Luke. Then Luke finds Jose for a 14 yard pass and catch down to the 7 yard line. Trey runs…Luke runs…and then Luke hits RJ for the TD pass with :59 seconds left in the third quarter. Score 14 Llano….Goliad 22.

Into the first four series of the fourth quarter….the Jacket defense has forced 3 punts and forced a fumble on the last four possessions of the Tigers. Senior Colton Bailey and sophomore Cole Kennedy are making big stops. In four possessions, the Tigers have 15 yards of offense.

Llano has the ball on the 32 yard line. Cash gets four yards on a pass from Luke. Luke gets 13 more on runs. Luke hits RJ for 11 yards, and then Graham for 10 more and a first down. And Trey starts to take over. A 30 yard run down to the 10 yard line. Two runs by Luke to the one…and Trey score with 7:08 left in the game. Llano goes for two…and Luke throws to Trey and the catch brings the score tied 22-22.

There is 7:08 left in the game.

Goliad has a good return on the kick off, up to the 41 yard line. The slot-t does what the slot t does best. Takes time off the clock. I turn to my super wife, Kay and tell her that “Llano is going to win this game”. Great friend Bozo Hoskins (Carter Bickett’s Grandfather) sits to my right. I think I said to Bozo “we got this” But here come the Tigers. Goliad puts together its longest drive of the game. 12 plays….59 yards…and wasting time between each play….everyone on Llano side was watching the clock…each tick….pretty sure they took over 1 full minute to run their last two plays. Then on the Jacket one yard line, Goliad scores. Kicks their extra point….score is 29-22 with 1:20 left in the game.

The Jackets were coming off the field. Players were slapping each other on their pads….clapping…Coaches were clapping….I thought…we’re going to win this game I have no idea how…but we are. I turned to Kay and said…”we’re going to win”. Look at our sidelines. We have two time outs left…and I turned to Bozo and said this is where RJ runs our trick play.

Goliad kicks off deep….and Jose catches and runs left…stops and throws perfectly, clear across the field to RJ, who catches the ball and with blocks, gets the ball out to the 46 yard line. First play…Luke throws to Trey for 4 yards, up to the 50. Second play… Luke throws to RJ for 11 yards. Third play. Luke throws an incomplete pass. On the next pass, Luke is forced to run and picks up 11 yard and first down. There are 32 seconds left on the clock. On the fifth play, Llano calls a run!!!! Trey picks up 4 to the 30 yard line….27 seconds left…Second down…Luke rolls right and before the rush can get him, fires a strike to Cash on the Jacket sideline…Cash throws off one defender and races to the end zone, diving for the touchdown!! Score is 29-28…23 seconds.

I am writing…with my head own…I can’t see anyhow, as all Jacket fans are standing up. The conservative me…said we would kick the extra point and play for over time. Bozo leans over and says” we’re going for two!!”.. I said something I can’t write here. But as shocked as I was…Goliad for sure can’t believe Llano is lining up to go for two….setting up on the left hash mark are the Jackets. Goliad calls a time out. I actually thought the Jacket Coaches were doing this to make the Tigers stop to think for a moment….as they had blocked our last kick (The FG try in the end of the 3rd Qt). But when time was called for teams to get back on the field, Luke lined his team up for the two point try.

Out from under the senior center Will Landers, solid blocking from Jaxon Johnson, Konrad, and Marshall Henderson, Luke waste no time…fires the strike to Cash as he sprints from right to left. A picture that was sent to me shows Cash three feet above the defenders head. Llano wins 30-29. For a moment…there was a hush…then unbelievable crazy screaming by all.( Well, not Goliad)….Plenty of time….17 seconds left in the game.

Senior Colton Bailey had to finally bring this game to a close. Goliad trying to pass, found Colton instead, and his interception brought his Jackets to a 12-1 record.

Just some interesting notes. I had Goliad with 59 total yards in the second half. Trey got his 100 yards rushing. Luke nearly 200 yards passing. 8 Yellow Jackets caught passes. Pass blocking was superb…again. Defense kept Llano in the game the second half. Llano only scored its second TD with 59 seconds left in the third quarter. Goliad was picked to win by two different ratings services by 10-12 points. Goliad was a very good football team. But they left 1:20 on the clock after they went ahead 29-22. Plenty of time for the Jackets!!

Llano now has won 11 games in a row. This week at Hero Stadium Friday night, we play Edna…they are ranked # 6 in Max Prep, and # 2 by Harris Ratings. There are only two teams in 3AAA, Division I with better records than Llano. Malakoff and Edna with 13-0 records. There are only 8 teams left playing football in 3AAA, Division I. The Jackets have proven they can play with anyone. Would be a bit nicer if we started a little faster, but there was nothing wrong with the quick finish. The Jackets never gave up. Pretty sure it never even was a thought. And the Llano Coaches showed the confidence they had in this team. Llano Coaches never blinked…and the players showed their faith in their Coaches. It is so great to be a part of Yellow Jacket Nation.

Area Win Over Orange Grove 34-6

The Llano Yellow Jackets spent last Friday night taking down a good Orange Grove team 34-6 in Area play. Llano has now won 10 games in a row. They have now beaten five teams in a row that had made the state play offs. They have won by over 22 points per game over the five game streak. The Jacket defense has allowed 14 points or less in 9 of their 12 games. The 11-1 Jackets are tied with the third most wins in a season in the history of LHS. Only the 2020, and the 2022 teams with 13 wins each have more.

I could say the Jacket defense started slow against Orange Grove. The Bulldogs took the opening kick off and drove a whopping 14 plays down to the Jackets 20 yard line. 4 completions for 34 yards. 10 running plays…but for only 21 yards net. Llano’s defense lead by Tate Morgan, Carter Bickett, Carsten Hays, Michael Logan, Austin Humphries, and Logan Van Pelt dropped the Bulldogs on five plays for zero or loss yards. The Bulldogs went for a fourth down on 4th and 3 yards to go. Senior Colton Bailey, junior Gavin Hays and sophomore Cole Kennedy stopped the run. Llano took over.

Here comes the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis runs for 11. Senior Trey Mote has a catch. Junior Graham Prokop has two catches for 14 yards. Mote for 10 more. Luke runs for 9. On the 33 yard line of the Bulldogs and on fourth down and 9 yards to go, Luke hits Graham again for a 23 yard gain and a first down. Two plays later Trey scores from four yards out. Llano never looks back

After an exchange of punts, Llano takes the ball on the 34 yard line. Luke throws to Trey for 14 yards. Then Trey does his thing…running behind senior center Will Landers, juniors Zach Driskel and Cason Stephenson…a 40 yard burst down to the 8 yard line. Luke picks up 3 and then Trey takes it in for a 13-0 Llano lead The first quarter totals has Llano at 116 yards of offense, while Orange Grove has 55.

Another exchange of punts. Junior Jose Sillas punts for 47 yards with no return.. Austin Humphries, Carsten and junior Niko Arms prevent any run backs with their hustle down field. Jose only punted twice in the game, both punts for 47 yards. On the second of his punts in the third quarter….senior Heith Rhea covered well. Jose has no hang time on his punts. But for some reason unknown to me, they are barley over the heads of the linemen, and the punts bound down the field slow enough for Jackets coverage teams to get down fast and prevent run backs. It works.

The Jackets took the opening kick off by senior RJ Coplin 15 yards to the 31 yard line. Trey had a 10 yard run over sophomore Mario Hernandez. Luke completed two more passes to Graham for 18 yards, and Trey had a catch for 11 more, and on second down from the Bulldog 24 yard line, Trey scores again. Fransico Caravan kicked good and the Jackets were up 20-0.

The third quarter was not kind to the Bulldogs. On their first possession they ran 7 plays with two first downs. But losses of 12 yards on two plays lead by a sac by Cole forced a punt. Junior RJ Friday had two tackles from his secondary position. Isaiah Aguilar was in on several stops, as was senior Wesley Whitaker…they were not taking their foot off the pedal. As on the next possession of the Bulldogs, junior linebacker Jose Sillas intercepted for the Jackets and set up Llano’s next score.

On the second play from the 22 yard line, Trey scores again. Blocking by senior Rice Thomas, junior Konrad Zwicke, seniors Marshall Henderson and Stephen Barrack make for a fun night for the Jackets running attack. Fransico kicks again and the score is 27-0.

The Jackets try an on side kick. It looked perfect. Bounded perfect….but somehow the Bulldogs recovered, but to no avail. The Jacket defense held again. Colton, Tate and Carter made the stops and another failed fourth down try by the Bulldogs.

Llano scores again. Luke completes passes of 13 yards to RJ, 14 to Heith, 4 to Graham. And then on the Jacket 47 yard line, Luke finds Heith for a 53 yard strike. Score 34-0.

The Bulldogs managed to score with 4:35 left in the game. RJ and Wesley made plays. And Llano finished the game by handing off to junior Cody Greenwood several times. Brady Kelly had a catch from Luke. And Llano was 11-1.

Thanks for the corrections from last week…..Trey’s 99 yard run that broke Lance Dickey’s record of 97 yards was in 2007…not 1997. And…Carsten Hays and Gavin Hays are not brothers! Just sounded good at the time!

Goliad is good. At this level, everyone is good. There are only 16 teams left in the state playing 3AAA, Division 1 football. Goliad has lost only to East Bernard who is ranked in the top ten of Division 11, and Edna, who is ranked # 2 in Harris Ratings. They have averaged 56 points a game over their last 4 games. Goliad was 10-3 last season, and are 10-2 now. Their best player is linebacker Angel Hernandez who is a four year starter.

Llano and Goliad have only played one time before, with Llano winning two years ago in the play offs.

Randolph is playing Edna Friday as we play Goliad. When we win, we will play the winner of that game in the quarterfinals.

I was told that the Jacket’s focus is on Goliad, but goal is to be playing in December. That happens with a win Friday afternoon at Ferris Complex in San Antonio.

10-1 Jackets Scorch Crystal City

The Fighting Llano Yellow Jackets defeated the Crystal City Javelinas Friday night in San Antonio by a score of 48-14. The Yellow Jackets now have a season record of 10-1, tied for the fourth best record ever recorded by the Yellow Jackets.

Both teams got the jitters out of the way early. Llano threw an interception on the fourth play from scrimmage, so the Jackets defense went to work. Three plays by the Javelinas produced no yards. Senior Colton Bailey, junior JD Friday and Logan Van Pelt put the pressure on and forced a punt. A punt that bounded all the way to the one yard line.

Senior Trey Mote found no yards on his first carry. But on second down, Trey found the right hole. Seniors Will Landers, Konrad Zwicke, and Stephen Barrack did the blocking. And Trey raced 99 yards for the record breaking 99 yard run. Francisco Caravano kicked good and Llano lead 7-0. Trey’s run of 99 yards breaks the school record held by Lance Dickey. Lance’s 97 yard run was in the Alamo Dome in 1997.

Crystal City’s best effort came next. The Javelinas put together a 9 play drive, helped by a Jacket 15 yard penalty. The Javelinas had two passes for 43 yards, and ran the ball 6 times. The score was tied with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

The Jackets next drive was stopped when Llano went for a first down on fourth down and were stopped. But on the Javelinas next possession, senior Carter Bickett intercepted for the Jackets and the quarter ended. In the first two quarters of the game, the Jacket defense forced Crystal City to punt 5 times, and were held to 67 total yards on 28 plays. Outstanding play by seniors Tate Morgan and nose guard Michael Logan. Also great effort covering those five punts by Crystal City. Zach Horton, Wesley Whitaker and Carter were always there.

The Jackets played maybe their best football in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis found sophomore Cash Lynch for the first score in the quarter. A 13 yard TD toss and the score was 13-7. On the Jackets next possession Luke found senior RJ Coplin 29 yards down field and Llano lead 20-7. And on the next possession, Luke threw a short flair out pass to Trey, who took it 81 yards for the score. Now it was 27-7. Crystal City had the ball 17 plays and had 12 yards.

Llano scored first in third quarter, when Colton dropped the Crystal City back for a loss in the end zone and a safety. Crystal City kicked, and Llano ran 7 plays. Luke threw to RJ for 13. Trey ran for 9. Cody Greenwood ran for 7 more. And on third and 11, Luke hooked up with senior Heith Rhea for the 11 yard TD reception. Llano lead 35-7.

Still in the third quarter, junior linebacker Jose Sillas played a bouncing fumble perfectly and returned it for the Jackets score. With 5:35 left in the third quarter, Jose had put the Jackets up by 42-7. Crystal City was able to score late in the quarter. Going into the fourth quarter, Llano lead 42-14.

The Jacket defense was so strong. Gavin and Carsten Hays( Brothers) were tough as nails. Austin Humphries from his cornerback position had a great solid night. Sophomore Cole Kennedy is so strong down in the trench, helping Llano to 9 plays for minus yards. At one point, Crystal City had 9 incomplete passes. Juniors Isaiah Aguilar and linebacker Niko Arms and sophomore Mario Hernandez are improving every week coming into the game and giving very valuable snaps.

The Jackets were able to play most all players, and even a few JV players got into the action. Maybe what was not suppose to happen, as Llano played the last few minutes. Greenwood came into relieve Trey, who had over 200 yards rushing. Cody decided he too would show his potential with 9 quality carries. And then Coach Green put running back Brady Kelly in for a few plays. Brady took it to the house with a 39 yard TD run. Final score 48-14.

There are 32, 3AAA, Division 1 schools left in the state play offs.

Llano plays Friday night again near San Antonio. We play Orange Grove, who beat San Diego last Friday night 26-21. Llano has never played the Bulldogs. Orange Grove had a record last year of 7-5. And this year stand at 8-3, losing only to Edna, Rockport-Fulton and Goliad. The Bulldogs have won their last four games. The only connection to Orange Grove is that long time ago Brent Kornegay offensive coordinator of Llano, went and became head coach at Orange Grove for many years. He retired a few years, and then returned back….then retired again. I think he is head coach now at Three Rivers.

Being in the state play offs in nothing new to the Bulldogs. They will come into the game very confident. Texted with Art some…he thinks they run the ball most of the time. (Right into our strength) . Logan, Michael, and Cole will be tested. The Jackets need to be extra aware of the penalties. 9 last week was not good. Still…Llano is playing their best football.

2024 DISTRICT CHAMPIONS !!!

The Fighting Llano Yellow Jackets took care of business Friday night on a rain soaked field in Ingram, Texas to hold back the fighting Warriors who had hopes of winning a district title. For the second week in a row, the Jackets jumped on the opposition early and never let up. Llano took the opening kick off with sophomore Cash Lynch giving Llano great field position up to the 45 yard line. Senior running back Trey Mote ran three times for 20 yards. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis threw to junior Graham Prokop for 9 yards down to the 15 yard line. Trey then plowed ahead for the score and a 7-0 Llano lead. Senior Tate Morgan kicked his dependable extra point. 9:30 left in the first quarter.

Defense is now up. Three downs…Minus 3 yards…and a forced punt. Tackles by Carter Bickett, Tate, Jose Sillas and Logan Van Pelt.

Jacket offense back in business. Luke hits senior Heith Rhea for a big 15 yard gain and a first down. Two plays later Luke throws to senior RJ Coplin and a 20 yard gain. First down on the 44 yard line. Trey runs two times for 19 yards. Jose gets 2 more. And on second down from the 20, Luke runs it in for a two touchdown lead with 3:32 left in the quarter. Tate’s kick was good.

Ingram came into this game with thoughts of not only beating Llano, but with a win would have been district champions. That has been the case with each team over the past three weeks. In a odd twist, Ingram, Marion and Randolph ended the season with identical 3-2 district records, tying for second place. The Jackets, by winning district become the number one seed. There is a system in place about how the tie breakers is accomplished, placing each team as a number two seed, number three, and then number 4.

The same thing happened in our sister district, # 14. Our district plays District 14 right out of the box in bi district. Three teams tied for second. Jourdanton won the district and Marion plays them. San Antonio Cole (plays Ingram), Hondo, (plays Randolph), and we play Crystal City. Crystal City is 8-2. Hardly a 4th seed!!

Ingram was not done. They scored at the end of the first quarter. Completed 3 of 5 passes, yet good pass rush from senior Michael Logan and and sophomore Cole Kennedy. Carter made several plays. Juniors Gavin Hays and Austin Humphries made plays in the secondary. Juniors Carsten Hays and Jose gave no quarter. Niko Arms gets better each week. A defense that gives up 15 points a game on the season.

Back comes Llano on the next possession. Luke finds tight end Konrad Zwicke for a 26 yard gain. And on first down from the 39 yard line, Trey goes the distance and a Jacket 21-7 lead. #18, a junior, Francisco Caravano kicked the extra point.

If there was any let down in this game, it came later the second quarter. Llano forced a Warrior punt. Trey ran for 26 yards. Luke ran for 8 more on two runs. Llano punted, but forced a fumble. And on the next four plays, Llano had 40 yards in penalties. So getting down to the 12 yard line, Llano turned the ball over. Down the field came Ingram Runs of 7, 7 and 8 yards. Completions of 11 and 15. Time running out in the half, so Ingram lines up for a field goal. Nope…again…the Jackets block another kick…about 5 for the season. I did not get who blocked it…so I’ll report it next week!!

There were four possessions by both teams in the third quarter. The Jacket defense took hold of the Warriors and had a three and out on the first possession. Good plays by Carsten, Jose, senior Colton Bailey and Tate.

Llano scored in three plays. Nine yard pass to Graham. 63 yard run by Trey to the one yard line. Trey in for the score. 28-7. Francisco kicked good.

Kye Hightower has done it all for Ingram this season. The very good running back had been held to less than 20 yards on 10 carries. But he finally got loose. On third down, Hightower went 50 yards and a TD. 28-14.

On the very wet field, Llano fumbled on the next possession. But not to fear. Carter stepped in front of a Ingram pass and Llano had the ball back. But two more exchange of punts by each team ended the quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Llano defense. Ingram had the ball 12 plays and four punts. 2 yards total offense. Michael Logan got a sac on the quarterback. Cody Greenwood got in at linebacker. Colton had several tackles. Wesley Whitaker forced a bad pass. And so dependable junior JD Friday had a great game…did not see a mistake. Niko played hard. Great game by all to ready for the playoffs….for the salute to the Jacket offensive blockers all….you got Trey his 1,000 yard season…now nearly 1,200 yards… and gave him his best game as a Jacket…. over 200 yards rushing.

The 9-1 Yellow Jackets have gotten better each week. Have won eight in a row after getting beat back in September by a very good Comanche team, now ranked about # 20 in the State. Crystal City is a good football team. They have lost two games by a total of 11 points. Our common foes have been Lytle and Ingram…but not much else in common. We last played Crystal City in 2017, Coach Matt Greens’ first season in Llano. The Jackets played Crystal City three years in a row, each time in Bi-District. Llano won in 2015, but lost the next two. The 1-2 record over all with Crystal City is one of the schools Llano has a over all losing record against. (See School Won-Loss in record book)

Llano now has won the District Championship four of the last five years. That has never been done before. Llano won district in 1973, 1975, and 1976. 2024 has been a very special year.

Art and I have texted back and forth all week end. He’s for sure thinking our offense can beat about anyone and will have their way with Crystal City. I believe strongly that our defense will keep us in any game. Our expectations are that we are both right. Llano 35 Crystal City 14

Jackets Swamp Marion 38-12

The fighting Llano Yellow Jackets played their best first half of the 2024 season Friday night, racing out to a 24-0 half time lead against the Marion Bulldogs. Marion came into the game with a 3-1 district record and with a win over Llano, they would have taken over the number one seed in 13-3AAA. But those dreams were quickly dashed as the Jackets completely dominated.

The Yellow Jackets have now won 27 of their last 29 games played in Jacket Stadium.

The offensive lineman of the Llano also had their best game. Senior Will Landers, Thomas Calderon, Rice Thomas, Jaxon Johnson, Stephen Barrack, and Isaiah Hernandez lead by example. Juniors Cason Stephenson, Zach Driskel, Ethan Griego, James Greenwood, Hayden Bigger and sophomore Mario Hernandez gave running room for senior running back Trey Mote to have his best game running the football. Trey had 135 yards on the ground, and three touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis added 70 yards and Cody Greenwood had 43. Trey is on the path to go over 1,000 yards for the season, and that gives him a big lift in confidence. But bragging rights go to these offensive lineman.

The Jackets defense is allowing about 15 points a game. That kind of effort will win a lot of games. The Jackets run a defense that for this old timer has no name, but it looks like a 4-3, or a 4-4 lining up. The three down lineman, seniors Logan Van Pelt, Michael Logan and sophomore Cole Kennedy line up and often take out the entire offensive line of the opponent. Mass disruption. This makes playing linebacker a joy. Senior Tate Morgan, and juniors Gavin and Carsten Hays are free to go full speed at the snap of the football. Out of 41 defensive snaps, I counted 22 negative plays by Marion. And that includes four Jacket interceptions.

I do not know what position senior Colton Bailey plays or junior Jose Sillas. I think cornerbacks, but maybe safety? Or defensive line ? I just know they seem to show up everywhere. Both having great seasons. Same can be said of senior Wesley Whitaker and juniors Niko Arms and Isaiah Aguilar. Strong and quick group all.

JD Friday had two interceptions Friday night! Gavin and Niko each got one. The secondary has played steady. Marion only completed 9 of 28 passes Friday night. Austin Humphries, Carter Bickett, and Heath Rhea are good tacklers in the open. Senior Zach Horton likely prevented a score with a sure tackle Friday night. night. They will all be tested again this Friday.

Luke completed 13 of 21 passes. A touchdown pass to Carter at the end of the second quarter put the Jackets up 24-0. Junior Graham Prokop had a catch, as did Trey, Jose, and H Back Konrad Zwicke. Senior RJ Coplin had four catches for 60 yards. Senior Heith Rhea caught two for 19 yards. And sophomore Cash Lynch had two catches for 32 yards. 8 Yellow Jackets caught the ball Friday night from Luke. For the season now, 11 Yellow Jackets have caught passes. That is spreading the wealth.

Art Dlugach texted me Saturday asking about the four interceptions in a game. What I have is that the four interceptions Friday night ties a school record in one game. The Jackets had four against Austin Crockett and Cotulla, both in 2022. Something tells me there are others. Please help out if you know, or give me a specific game and year. I’ve got most every game play by play. Still adding to that record book.

Beating a good Marion team adds to the confidence level. But up next is Ingram. Ingram beat Marion! Marion’s only loss in District until Friday night. Now Ingram thinks they have a shot at taking the crown. Their only loss in District is to Randolph. So…should they beat the Jackets, Ingram would be the number one seed. But that is not going to happen.

On the radio after the game Friday night, head Coach Matt Green expressed that the Ingram game centered around their great player, Kye Hightower, a 205 pound bruiser Hightower played quarterback last season. But this season he plays wherever he is needed. And that usually is where the football is. This may be the hardest test for our Jacket defense this year. Ingram has scored 112 points in their last three games. This is not the Ingram team of old. I remember thinking after last seasons’ game with Ingram…that they were getting better. Much better than I had remembered.

Records mean little at this point in time. The Jackets are 8-1. Only eight teams in school history have won 9 or more games in a season. It should mean everything to this great group of seniors to be included in that elite group of Jacket teams. Beating Ingram will put them there.

Jackets Escape W/ 27-26 District Win

The Llano Yellow Jackets defeated the 2023 District Champions on their own field Friday night to take the lead for the district crown. Playing San Antonio Randolph on Ro-Hawk field is hard enough on its own. But Llano out played the Ro-Hawks down to the last play, and that was what it took to win this very hard fought district contest. The 27-26 win puts Llano at 3-0 in the district race with two games to go. Randolph is now 1-2 and will be fighting for its life to make the play offs. Randolph was picked by several publications to win 13-AAA at the beginning of the season. Still, Randolph is 6-2 for the season, and could easily now go 8-2 and with some luck by all, meet the Jackets again deeper into the State Play offs.

The Jackets began the game with a new twist, as Randolph kicked off, and the Jacket player reached high to try and catch the kick off. But thru his hands went the football, and a Ro Hawk caught the ball in mid air. First and ten Ro Hawks. Four plays later Randolph scored with only 1 minute and 15 seconds gone in the game! 7-0 Ro Hawks. (No one from Llano flinched…nor did any Jackets.)

The next possessions of each team punted. Llano had the ball on the 36 yard line. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis finds senior RJ Coplin for an eight yard completion. And on second and two, Luke drops back and high flies a pass that senior running back Trey Mote catches and goes the 60 yards for Llano first score. 7-7

Now, each team gets the ball twice, and each team punts twice. Second quarter. Ro Hawks quarterback drops back, and from a delayed blitz position, senior Colton Bailey sacks the quarterback in a terrific hit, out goes the football, and senior Logan Van Pelt recovers in the end zone for the Jacket lead. 14-7.

I was afraid this wasn’t going to be easy. Senior Tate Morgan kicks off, and and after three plays, the Ro Hawks are sitting on the Jacket one yard line. In for score goes the very good Ro Hawk quarterback…thus a 14-14 score at half time.

The third quarter gets started. Each team punts. Llano’s Carsten Hays, Tate, Cole Kennedy, Jose Sillas, and senior Michael Logan are playing hard…but there is little stopping…completely this good Ro Hawks offense.

Luke drops back on first down on the 33 yard line. And again senior Trey runs under the pass and out runs everyone and a 67 yard touchdown. Llano leads 20-14, after Tate’s extra point gets blocked. Here come the Ro Hawks….7 plays and they tie the score at 20-20 due to their missed extra point.

Llano begins what will be one of its longest and most plays in a drive starting the fourth quarter. The 14 play drive with Trey carrying 5 times. Jose once. Luke found Carter Bickett for 8 yards and on third down and 13, Carter again for 17 yards and a first down. Great throws and catches. Then from the 6 yard line and third down, Luke hits Cole Kennedy and the Jackets score. Tate kicks true and Llano is ahead 27-20. Don’t think for a second this game is over.

The Ro Hawks put together their own 11 play drive. Their quarterback ran 5 times for 41 yards and three first downs. And from one yard out, he scores. 27-26.

The Ro Hawks line up to go for two points and the win….and their quarterback is two yards from taking the lead. He has run 15 times and 97 yards…..but, an offensive lineman moves…5 yard penalty….still going for two….I had already changed it on my paperwork for Randolph to kick and tie the game up…and I look up… the Ro Hawks stay on the field.

The seven yards to win looked reasonable with their quarterback…he’d just roll out and go…but the Jacket defense had a better idea….good penetration by Michael, Logan and Cole…Tate, Jose, Carsten, and Gavin Hays were on the line of scrimmage waiting for the run, and the quarterback stops his run and throws to the end zone….Carter, and JD Friday, and Colton, and Austin Humphries, and another I can’t tell…all stay thru to their coaching….the ball goes out and thru the sidelines….the Ro Hawks are denied…27-26 Jackets. The Ro Hawks on side kick, and sophomore Cash Lynch recovers for Llano. Luke takes a knee for the final seconds of the game.

The fourth quarter only saw Llano with the one touchdown drive. 14 plays. And Randolph had only the one possession, and 11 plays. It was a great game, if you didn’t care who won.

A few points. Jose punted 6 times for a nearly 40 yard average. Field position really played a big part. I showed no punt return yardage…JD Friday helped with that…great hustle getting down field to cover. Nico Arms, Carsten, Gavin and Heith Rhea too were down field. This is nothing but pure hustle and that extra effort it takes to win.

The Jackets had only one penalty in the first half, and that was a bouncing punt that hit JD as he was going down field. Super concentration…but in the third quarter, Llano had three penalties over 7 plays for 35 yards…costly…..Llano, other than the first play of the game, had no turnovers….that’s how you win close games.

Marion beat Randolph two weeks ago. Marion beat Llano last year 28-21. Marion thinks they are going to win district. They beat Llano and they are there. The Jackets are playing for their 27th win in their last 29 games in Jacket Stadium. This great group of Jacket seniors play their last game Friday night in Jacket Stadium. This is special.

I’d like to think the Jackets will come out fired too the hilt, and never take their boots off the Bulldogs’ necks. But…it can be done in other ways.
