Yellow Jackets Should Be Ready

The week of San Antonio Randolph is here. No more worries about looking ahead. No more wondering how the Ro-Hawks did last week. The game that many have anticipated for a whole year is here.

The Jackets took it on the chin last year 24-7, in what began a three game losing streak for the Jacket. I suspect what was most surprising is that Llano had won three district championships in a row, 2020, 2021, and 2022. The 34-5 record over those three years caused for expectations. But they did not get automatic wins. Each game had its own personality. And every win was hard fought.

Friday night will be no different. Randolph went on to a 10-2 record last season. They are undefeated this season at 7-0. Sam Oakland is their star returning from last season, playing running back and linebacker. Quarterback Collin Stucki returns and he threw for 26 TDs last season. Randolph makes few errors. Very few penalties and very few turnovers. Randolph is a very good football team.

So is Llano. The Jackets are scoring at a rate of 33 points a game. The defense is even better, allowing only 14 points a game. Penalties need to be cleaned up, and turnovers notched down to 0 The Jackets will win this game in the offensive and defensive lines. Few words are said about the guys that get dirty every Friday night. Seniors Stephen Barrack, Jaxon Johnson, Rice Thomas, Marshall Henderson, Thomas Caldron and Will Landers are all good football players. Juniors James Greenwood, Cason Stephenson, Zach Driskel, Ethan Griego, Hayden Bigger have been working hard for the Jackets running attack that averages over 200 years a game. This group needs to have their best night as Jackets to beat Randolph. Play one play at a time. It doesn’t have to get bigger than that.

The guys that have clogged the running attacks up front are playing great football….lead by senior nose guard Michael Logan. Sophomore Cole Kennedy is a great disrupter, and along with Logan Van Pelt and senior Isaiah Hernandez. While making lots of stops, they are so good about keeping blockers off the Llano linebackers. Senior Tate Morgan, and juniors Carsten and Gavin Hays along with Jose Sillas, Nico Arms and Mario Hernandez have made for hard sledding against Llano. No kidding ones self. The Jacket defense will have a super test Friday night. One play at a time.

The Jackets punting game has been fun for me to watch this season. Junior Jose Sillas punts, but not in the normal since. Don’t need a stop watch for the hang times. There is none. But, Jose usually kicks an end over end kick away from any punt returner, and usually ends up in the 30-35 yard range. He also has a very aggressive group of people that cover, lead by Carsten and Gavin Hays. They are always down field chasing Jose’s punts. Great effort by all.

The Jackets have played a tough schedule this year. Jarrell has won 4 games in their very tough district and in 4AAAA. 4AAAA Marble Falls gave Llano three hard quarters. Comfort will make the play offs. And Comanche is ranked in the top 20 in 3AAA. Randolph will be as talented as the Indians. But what I see, Llano has improved a lot since the Comanche game. The Jackets will be ready.

6-1 Jackets Take a Rest

The Llano Yellow Jackets ran over the lowly Lulling Eagles Friday night at the Homecoming game at Jacket Stadium. The Jackets secured the 49-0 win by scoring the first four times they had the football, and playing shut down defense. A relief to most Jacket fans is that Llano came out from the opening kick off and never looked back. The win was the 25th win in the last 27 games played at Jacket Stadium.

Llano now stands at 6-1 for the season, and more important, have a 2-0 record in District 13-3AAA.

As a reminder, last season the Jackets started district play at 2-0, but then found the going awful tough, losing the next 3 games. The Jackets have this week off , so getting well and rested is likely the biggest item on the Jacket menu. The showdown of the year comes next week as Llano travels to S.A. Randolph for what will be the best avenue to a district championship. The undefeated Ro-Hawks return a slew of last years’ starters, as well as their top two offensive backs. But that is next week.

There is no kidding anyone, Lulling is not a very good football team. But what I saw as best is that Llano came into this game, “playing itself”. Not worried about what the Eagles could do, but what Llano could do, and improve from the 6 previous games.

Llano scored on its third play from scrimmage. Sophomore Luke Davis first threw to junior Graham Prokop for 25 yards. A run by senior Trey Mote put the jJckets on the Eagles 36 yard line. This time Luke went long to sophomore Cash Lynch for the score….senior Tate Morgan kicked true, and the Jackets were ahead 7-0.

Lulling ran 8 plays in the first quarter. Made a grand total of 10 totals yards. And were forced to punt three times. Its really unfair to mention just a few Jackets that played so good, and then leave out a few more. But someone was making so many tackles. Linebackers Gavin Hays likely had the most. Tate was there time after time to stop the Eagles. And the defensive line can be most responsible for that. The lineman kept the blockers off the linebackers. Sophomore Cole Kennedy, Junior Hayden Bigger, and seniors Michael Logan, Logan Van Pelt and Isaiah Hernandez had really good games. Jose Sillas and Niko Arms are just getting better. And no one plays harder than junior Carsten Hays. Senior Wesley Whitaker is such a valuable player, and when he gives some players a breather, there is no drop off. Senior Colton Bailey is playing at an all district level…so steady. every week. Llano’s defense is averaging giving up 14 points a game. That number will win football games. And the two shutouts matches the 2022 Jacket teams, and they finished 13-1! Defensive Coordinator Matt Anastasio has his players peaking at the right time.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Priem has got to be awful proud. The Jacket offense is averaging nearly 33 points a game.

Injuries are just part of the game. It breaks your heart when you see these, and especially when a player losses the entire season. The loss of junior running back Brayton Shaw is an example. Brayton will return for his senior year, so the ‘ole saying “next one up”..I thought Brayton was such a great contrast to the running style of Trey Mote, so the concern was crippling in my mind. Next man, or men up…here comes sophomore Cody Greenwood, James’ little brother. Great first burst. And the running of junior Jose Sillas. Just power. Junior Brady Kelly too got into the mix, running 3 times for 23 yards…..Trey can now take a breather. The running backs are in good hands, and Coach Priem knows how to use them all four!

For a short highlight film…Luke hit senior RJ Coplin for the next TD and a 35 yard toss and run. Trey carries over from the eight yard line and Llano lead 21-0. Junior Konrad Zwicke caught a 22 yard pass from Luke on the fourth drive as Luke carries for the final 18 yards and with…again, Tate’s extra point made it 28-0. Then on the first play of the Jackets’ 6th series from the Jackets’ 40 yard line, Luke again threw to Konrad who literally threw off several pesky Eagles and then showed off for all to see, a great burst of speed down the sidelines for a 60 yard touchdown. Before half, Llano was ahead 35-0…..Oh, but wait,…the defense forced another three and out, a punt, and a poor punt let the Jackets have the ball on the Eagles 25 yard line. Luke said he would take care of this, and on the first play, hit Graham Prokop for the 25 yard TD pass. Now….42-0

Continued great plays by junior JD Friday kept the Eagles on the outside looking in. Two more forced punts in the third quarter and twice the Eagles went for first downs on fourth down. Both times the Jackets made the stops. Carsten, Mario Hernandez, and outstanding tackles by sophomore Cole Kennedy and senior Isaiah Hernandez “Just said No”…

One of the best, and most important plays of the game came in the fourth quarter. Luke threw an interception and the linebacker for Lulling ran it nearly all the way into the end zone, but someone…and I did not get their jersey number never quit hustling…I think a Jacket offensive lineman… pulled the Eagle ball carrier down on the three yard line. That Jacket player told me alot about this team….being ahead 49-0 was still not enough. It meant so much to that player to somehow, preserve the shutout. And his defensive teammates came thru for him….Coach A’s defense forced three loss plays, where Lulling lined up to break that shutout with a field goal try from the 21 yard line. This was going to be easy for the Eagles….but again….the Jackets said no…I think JD Friday blocked the try. The shut out saved. Players till playing hard deep into the fourth quarter…man it is fun being a Llano Yellow Jacket.

We’ll talk more in a few days….a needed and deserved rest, and fans and players alike…getting ready for Randolph.

Second Half Jackets Forge to 5-1 Record

The Llano Yellowjackets again played a lackluster first half for the fourth week in a row, only to come roaring back and win their fourth straight game and beat District foe Florence 34-14 Friday night. The Jackets 14-14 half time score kept the Jackets in the contest. But the slot t running Buffaloes gave Llano all they wanted in the first half. Florence had 148 yards rushing in the first half. Llano had only one yard of offense in the first quarter, having run only 6 plays.

Florence took the opening kick off and ran 12 running plays with no passes to take a 7-0 lead. The Buffaloes ran off 7 minutes and 10 seconds before Llano saw the football. And while the Jacket defense only gave up one double digit run, the other 11 plays were grinders. Senior Tate Morgan and senior Michael Logan seemed to be in on every tackle. But it was taking a mob of Jackets to bring the Buffalo runners to the ground. I wrote down # 26…44…19…23…and 22 many many times.

Llano did turn things around in the second quarter. Sophomore Luke Davis ran for 9 yards. Then threw to sophomore Cash Lynch for a first down. Luke ran again for 6 Yards Senior Trey Mote got 5 more. And then Luke found the fleeting senior RJ Coplin running deep and hit him for a 64 yard scoring pass. Tate kicked true and the score was 7-7.

On the Jackets second possession of the second quarter, Trey streaked 85 yards to what every thought was a long TD run, but turned out to be a long penalty for holding. So back to work. Junior Graham Prokop caught a 14 yard pass from Luke. RJ came right back with an 11 yard catch. Sophomore Kenny Greenwood ran for 13 more. Then Luke picked up 22 more on a run down to the 18 yard line. 3 yards by junior Jose Sillas. And the final play Luke found Cash deep in the end zone for the TD catch and Llano took the lead. It was Cash’s first TD catch as a varsity player, but it was close….keeping his feet in bounds and catching the ball in one athletic move.

But the Buffaloes were not finished. Florence ran 6 running plays, covered the 58 yards and scored with :28 seconds left in the half. 14-14. Jacket fans had seen this before.

Half Time Scores of the Jackets last four Games:

Llano Opponent

7 Marble Falls 13……….Final Score: Llano 20 Marble Falls 13

13 Jarrell 14………Final Score Llano 21 Jarrell 14

7 Comfort 12……..Final Score Llano 37 Comfort 23

14 Florence 14……..Final Score Llano 34 Florence 14

The second half was another story. The Jacket defense was all one could have hoped for. Florence had only three possessions. The first one Florence drove to the 26 yard line, where on fourth and one yard to go, Llano stopped the runner cold. On the second drive, the Buffaloes drove 10 plays to the 37 yard line and on fourth down, the Jackets held. And the third possession the Jackets forced Florence to punt. I had the Buffaloes with 65 total offensive yards in the second half. Cole Kennedy had a rough long night as the Buffaloes just keep coming straight at you. Colton Bailey Cole, along with Logan Van Pelt and Mario Hernandez and Marshall Henderson held their own. Isaiah Hernandez and Rice Thomas had good nights. And the secondary had a good work out. Austin Humphries, Niko Arms and Carsten Hayes were in on so many tackles. Jose, Tate, and James Greenwood so steady. And # 19….Gavin Hays and # 6 JD Friday are adding extra lighting to the fields. Really playing great. And senior Wesley Whitaker is really starting to show up. And good contribution by Bradley Kelly Super effort.

Offensive lineman really never get any publicity, unless it is bad. But seniors Will Landers, Thomas Caldron, Marshall Henderson, Rice Thomas, Stephen Barrack and Jaxon Johnson should stand proud. Yeomans effort against the good line of Florence. I had the Jackets with over 200 yards rushing. That’s winning football. James, Ethan Griego, Cason Stephenson, Zach Driscal, Hayden Bigger and sophomore Mario Hernandez are all good talents. Getting better.

In the second half, Cash had a 19 yard catch, Jose Sillas had a 16 yard catch and RJ another catch for 11 yards plus a TD catch from Luke for 12 yards. Trey had a 19 yard TD run. And the strong running of Kenny Greenwood and Jose help to make Trey’s life somewhat easier. Really strong effort by all.

Llano has played four Slot T running teams in the last four weeks. The slot T is very hard to defense, despite very predictable plays. Florence had a running back that was super strong. He often carried many Jackets for that extra 2, 3 or 6 yards. I don’t know, but expect Llano to face the slot t several more times this year. It is not an offense with alot of skilled players, such as a RJ, or Carter Bickett, or Colton, or Graham Prokop, or even Cash. But it is hard nosed. But Llano must start sooner. Like at the beginning of the game.

The Jackets had over 100 yards in penalties. Have no idea if all were ligament…non the less….this is not sustainable. Trey had two touchdowns called back….I think on blocks downfield. When you have a back like Trey, shield blocks are more effective. No fear of getting a holding penalty, and Trey will adjust as he flies down field. Any take down blocks down field so often just look like holding.

Home Coming….Lulling here at Jacket Stadium. Hall of Fame Inductees at O’Henry Jr. High about 4:30…then walk over to Dennis Hill Hall for short ceremony. Come if you can. It is special…everyone is invited.

The Jackets have the opportunity to win again at Home. Going for 26 of last 28 games with a win. Seniors…be leaders….keep this very positive season rolling. And being 2-0 in District play is a must.

Jackets Down Good Comfort Team

The 37-23 win Friday night at Jacket Stadium may not reflect the true grit of the contest. Comfort was coming to Llano in hopes of improving their record to 4-1, but another very strong second half by the Jackets moved Llano to a 4-1 record, and thus readied the Home Team for District Play that begins this week in Florence.

Llano again got off to a quick start. Sophomore Luke Davis threw to wide receiver Graham Prokop on the first play from scrimmage and Graham had Llano on the 36 yard line and a first down. On the second play, senior Colton Bailey took an end around hand off and went the distance, 61 yards and Llano lead 7-0 after senior Tate Morgan’s extra point kick.

Llano would manage only 2 net yards on its next three possessions and three punts by junior Jose Sillas. Comfort in the meantime scored twice in the first quarter. The Bobcats run the slot T that Llano has faced against both Jarrell and Marble Falls. Their first drive covered 48 yards and 7 plays. Junior JD Friday blocked the extra point, so Llano still lead 7-6. But the Bobcats came right back with a nine play drive and went ahead 12-7. Comfort did not throw a pass on their two touchdown drives. To add insult to injury, Comfort tried an onside kick after they went ahead, but a nice recovery by sophomore Kenny Greenwood covered the ball for Llano.

After punts from both teams, Llano had the ball on the 47 yard line. A pass from Luke to Trey Mote for 5 yards set up another long run for a TD by Luke, going 42 yards and Llano took the lead. Blocking by Will Landers, and Carson Stephenson help spring Luke for the score. The score was 13-12 with 8:43 left in the half. Comfort responded.

No passing…just straight hand offs of 0, 8, 1, 1 , 7, 2 yards until their tailback went 54 yards. One play later Comfort took the lead 18-13. Now it was the Jackets’ turn.

Graham caught an 18 yard pass from Luke. Trey picked up 4. Then Luke again to senior RJ Coplin for 20 yards an another first down. Luke ran for 18. And Trey carried it over for the TD. Strong blocking against Comfort by seniors Jaxon Johnson and Stephen Barrack put Llano up at half time 21-18, for the only time in the past three games.

The Jackets are now 4-1 all time against Comfort. I am sure this is the best team I have ever seen by the Bobcats. Also very sure the Bobcats defensive line may have been the best Llano has played this season. The lineman were big, quick and strong.

The second half was fun to watch, if you like close games. Comfort took the kick off and marched 7 plays down to the Jacket 36 yard line, where….junior JD Friday picked off their pass and put Llano in good position. Yet Llano was not able to move the ball against this defense. So the Jackets punted….except it went over Jose head…where he chased the ball to a point, and then protected the ball as it rolled out of the end zone for a touchback. A great heads up play by Sillas. The score was now 21-20…Llano.

Another exchange of punts and then Comfort had the ball on the Jackets 9 yard line after a 6 play drive. Comfort ran the ball right into the teeth of the Jackets. Tate, Gavin Hays, Niko Arms and Michael Logan along with Cole Kennedy and Logan Van Pelt halted the drive. Comfort then kicked a 26 yard field goal, and took the lead 23-21.

Comfort kicked off. On the first play, Trey went 40 yards for the TD and the lead 29-23. Again strong blocks from tight end Konrad Zwicke, junior Zach Driskel and junior James Greewood.

The fourth quarter, Llano put the game away. The Jacket defense was playing on all four cylinders. Junior Gavin Hays was all over the field making tackles. Cole Kennedy, Carsten Hayes and Austin Humphries had their best games this season. Nico Arms replaced one of the injured Jackets and played outstanding. Senior Wesley Whitaker and junior Isaiah Aguilar really stepped up when it was needed. Mario Hernandez is playing great on the inside of the line. And Tate had his usual outstanding night.

The Jackets took a step up against Comfort. The Jackets were in better condition than Comfort. The Bobcats were tired in the last quarter. Llano was still looking fresh. Luke carried twice for 8 yards, and Trey went 47 yards for the final score. He too scored the 2 points after the score and the score was 37-23.Toward the end of the game Gavin picked off a Bobcat pass to end all threats. Kenny Greenwood carries twice at the end for 37 yards. Blocking by Rice Thomas and Marshall Henderson and Ethan Griego put a finishing touch on this game that had 6 lead changes. Llano is now 4-1.

Lessons learned. I really think the inexperienced is becoming experienced. Learning that jumping to an early lead has little meaning over a 48 minute game. Learning to grab for more is more important than waiting for more to “just come”. The Jackets begin District this week with Florence. Florence beat Hico last week, and do not think for a moment that they don’t think right now, they are in the district race. Florence has 8 offensive and 8 defensive players returning from last year. I don’t think Florence will give the Jackets a real tough game. But this is where Llano must continue to improve. Score often…score and don’t look back You don’t let up when you get ahead. You put the foe away. Senior leadership can start to make this happen. The seniors got it started in the second half against Comfort. Seniors demand that it keep going.

Another Second Half Win… 21-14 Over Jarrell

The fighting Llano Yellow Jackets beat the 4AAAA Jarrell Cougars Friday night 21-14 for the third year in a row. Jarrell, a 4AAAA State Play off team, went into the dressing room at half time, holding a 14-13 lead over the Jackets. But another very strong defensive effort, and an offense that mustered enough to take the lead, and hold on when it counted the most.

As sports announcer of the Llano Yellow Jackets Art Dulgach said after the game, “this had to be one of the most exciting non- district games he had every announced.” Jarrell came to Llano with a new slot T offense that was nothing but stingy with the football. However, Llano on its first possession and on the third play, sophomore quarterback Luke Davis dropped back and then sprinted right up the middle for a 56 yard TD run. Tate Morgan kicked the extra point and Llano lead 7-0 with 10:44 left in the quarter.

Jarrell responded. 6 plays and 77 yards and the score was tied 7-7.

Jacket running back and senior Trey Mote did most of the heavy lifting. With runs of 13 yards on two carries, and junior Brayton Shaw running twice for 15 more before a fumble gave the ball back. Luke completed a pass to sophomore Cash Lynch that had Llano on the move before the turnover.

What might be one of those “never to know” statistics, Jarrell put on a show starting in the second period. The Cougars began with an 18 play drive. All running plays. Covering 72 yards…and 18 plays. I’ve never seen a team go 18 plays. No penalties. Just hardnose football. And remember, the Jackets were just as tough. Jarrell had only one run of 11 yards. The other 17 plays averaged 3.59 yards per carry. Jacket defenders lead by Tate, Carsten Hays, Gavin Hays, Cole Kennedy, Jose Sillas, Michael Logan and Logan Van Pelt were relentless. Colton Bailey coming up from the secondary showed the senior playing at the highest level. Senior Carter Bickett has become a menace from his safety position. And Juniors Austin Humphries and JD Friday are becoming so steady and reliable. All getting better every week.

But now Jarrell lead 14-7. So Llano stormed back. 17 yards by Trey on the ground. Luke ran for 2 more an a first down. Trey got 9 more on the ground, and taking the last four yards and scoring with 3:26 left in the half. The extra point was blocked, and as last week, the Jackets went into half time down 14-13. The Jacket offensive lineman played their best game. Senior Jaxon Johnson at center, and senior tackle Thomas Calderon are getting off the ball so much faster than at the beginning of this season. Juniors James Greenwood, Zach Driscal, Cason Stephenson and Ethan Griego helped Trey to his third over 100 yard game rushing. Seniors Will Landers, Marshall Henderson and Rice Thomas are major improvement players, and allowing Llano, too, to become a solid blocking running team.

Blocking is something you hear about, but few see. Junior “H-Back”/ tight end Konrad Zwicke has become a blocking master. Big, strong and smart. Saves so many plays when Luke and Trey and Brayton are looking for holes.

Only one pass was thrown in the third quarter. Luke threw an incompletion. Jarrell threw none. The Jackets ran 14 running plays for 72 yards. Trey, Brayton and Luke. Jarrell ran 10 plays for 24 yards. Losses by Jarrell were caused by great plays of by Austin, Carsten, and Michael Logan. A super game by sophomore Cole Kennedy from his defensive line position. Always full speed. Gavin Hays too had a great night on defense. And all would be tested in the fourth quarter.

At the end of the third quarter, Llano had driven down to the four yard line. 13 yards by Trey. 14 by Brayton. And on third down, Konrad slipped out into the end zone, where Luke found him for the TD pass and reception. This time Llano went for two. And Jose Sillas went into the end zone, and Luke too found him. Llano lead 21-14.

But the game had a long ways to go. In came the slot T offense. 2 yards, 9 yards, one yard, a 22 yard burst. An 11 yard gain. Jarrell was on the Jacket 9 yard line. 6 more…on the 3. A dive into the middle for two more. On the one. But the Jackets held. JD, RJ, Jose, and Carter were all there. Fourth down on the one. Jackets tackle for a one yard loss!!! A 15 play drive by the Cougars had been stopped. To Quote Art “Oh my”. And it still was not over.

In the shadows of the goal post, Llano made 5 yards on two plays. They could not afford to give the ball back to Jarrell. Third down. Between offensive coordinator Ryan Priem and Head Coach Matt Green, someone had faith in throwing a pass! Llano had only thrown 6 passes all night. Luke a quick drop back, and a strike to senior RJ Coplin on the East sideline…11 yards and a first down. The Jackets then put the ball into the hands of Trey who ran 6 straight plays for 29 plus yards out to the 45 yard line, and :17 seconds left to play. Jose came in and safely punted where two plays later the game was over. Whoa!

Llano had beaten two 4AAAA schools in as many weeks. Jarrell was 3-0 coming into the game. Llano has now won 24 of their last 26 games played in Jacket stadium. Tradition anyone?

All was so positive, but one exception. Junior running back Brayton Shaw left the game late and it looked like a bad injury. Brayton had 50 yards in the game rushing, and they were all crucial plays, picking up three first down. Such a great young back and so compatible with the way Trey runs. All look forward to his recovery and return.

The 3-1 Jackets host old foe Comfort this week. The Bobcats went two deep into the play offs last year, and this season are in the district with Blanco. They return a running back who had 1,975 yards last season with 20 TDs…an three experienced linemen returning. Never a week off. But as mentioned a few weeks ago, every week “get better”. The Jackets are getting better.

Llano 31 Comfort 12

After the game, Kay and I rush back to the car where the radio is turned to 102.9 and to listen to Art and his interviews….And the old “Homer” he is, Art was going on to defensive coordinator Matt Anastasio and how unbelievable the defense played…and what may have been said at half time? And a quote I hope to remember forever, “Coach A” said…Art, I did not make one single tackle tonight”!!

Second Half Jackets Beat Mustangs

The Llano Yellow Jackets, playing at home for the first time this season, came from behind Friday night to beat an old rival, the Marble Falls Mustangs 20-13 to up their record to 2-1 for the season.

Marble Falls took the lead into halftime 13-7. It took the Jackets a full half to get the offense rolling. Llano had over 100 yards rushing in the first half, and over 100 passing. But only 7 points. The Jackets first two drives covered 70 yards and 15 plays. A punt and a missed field goal was all Llano had to show. Graham Prokop had a 41 yard pass reception from sophomore quarterback Luke Davis to set up the field goal try.

On the other hand, the defense kept the score knotted at 0 to 0. The defense forced a punt with strong play by JD Friday, Carsten Hays and Austin Humphries. The Mustangs went for the first down on fourth down on the next series, only to be stopped. Senior Colton Bailey had one of his best games, in on several tackles and playing pass defense. Carter Bickett at safety and Brayton Shaw stopped the Mustangs.

Llano scored first in the second quarter. Luke completed three passes in a row to RJ Coplin, and two receptions by junior tight end Konrad Zwicke. Senior running back Trey Mote would have his best game. Trey ended the game with 162 yards. Luke ran for 23 yards on this drive and Trey scored from 8 yards out. Tate Morgan kicked good for the 7-0 lead.

The Jacket offensive line also had their best game. Playing against what looked like a very big Mustang defensive line, Llano paved the way for Mote and Brayton Shaw, who had 79 yards. Jaxson Johnson, Cason Stephenson, senior Will Landers, junior James Greewood and junior Zach Druskel had great games. With seniors Stephen Barrack and Thomas Caldron and Isaiah Hernandez, the Jackets line is in good hands.

The Mustangs had two big plays in the second quarter. A 58 yard run that set up their first score, and a 40 yard pass and catch for a TD. JD Friday kept the score close with a super effort and blocking the extra point try by the Mustangs. Marble Falls lead 13-7 at halftime.

There were rumblings coming out of the Yellow Jacket dressing room at halftime, but no one knew what was said. The only thing anyone really knows is that Llano came out in the second half and were on fire. On the third play run by Marble Falls, Carsten Hays got his first varsity interception of the year, setting Llano up on the 47 yard line. Luke steered the offense down the field. 14 yards by Trey. A completion to Carter for 7 yards. Luke ran for 8 more. The speedster Brayton Shaw ran for 29 yards down to the five yard line. And two plays Shaw scored and with Tates’ extra point kick, Llano lead 14-13.

The defense came to play in the second half. Another take a way. This time Michael Logan recovered a Mustang fumble and the Jackets had the ball on the 30 yard line. The defense held the Mustangs to 24 total yards in the third quarter. Exceptional play by Michael, junior Jose Sillas, senior Logan Van Pelt and sophomore Cole Kennedy. These four guys set up shop in the Mustangs backfield. The Mustangs managed only 26 yards rushing in the fourth quarter. # 19 Gavin Hays had a great second half from his defensive secondary position. Colton and Shaw lead all tacklers with 11 each. Tate, as usual was outstanding from his linebacker position had 9 tackles.. Jose, Wesley Whitaker, and Michael Logan were over powering.

Llano scored the winning touchdown on a drive at the end of the third quarter. Shaw, Trey and Luke ran the football. Trey scored from 19 yards out. Llano went up 20-13.

The Jacket defense faced the Mustangs on 12 series. They forced 4 punts, held on fourth down 4 times, and got three turnovers. The Mustangs were held to under 300 yards of offense. Llano had over 400 yards of offense. A great win against a good 4A school.

The Jackets play again at home this week against Jarrell. Another 4A school. Jarrell made the play offs last season and have 8 returning starters. Their quarterback, Nico Rodriguez threw for 2,598 yards last season with 28 passing TDs. Llano has beaten the Cougars in the only two meetings, winning last season 28-13.But last year won’t help much. The Jackets can expect a very strong group of athletes, and the ball will be in the air. Llano must get a good pass rush and the secondary must be ready. Expect Jarrell to score points. I expect Jarrell to be as good as Comanche. But I do see Llano getting better each week. Llano 31 Jarrell 26.

Indians Ambush Jackets

The Llano Yellow Jackets found their own hornets nest last Friday night in Comanche, falling by the score of 34-21 and squaring their season record to 1-1.

Who would have thunk? Comanche kicked off to Llano, and RJ Coplin took it all the way back for a 90 yard score. Senior Tate Morgan kicked the extra point thru and Llano lead 7-0 with less than 20 seconds gone. Maybe it was too easy.

What was odd is that there was no let down. The Jacket defense came right back on the field and forced a three and out. Carter Bickett and Tate forced a punt. Llano’s first series was nothing to talk about, but why take any chances. Comanche gets the ball back, drives 8 plays, but again, punts.

I really thought that at this point the Jackets were waiting for that right moment. But, it never came. On Comanche’s next possession, on first down, the Indian’s quarterback went 56 yards nearly untouched to tie the score 7-7.

From my view, the air was out of the balloon. Llano punted on its next three possessions before half. Comanche score again. It was 14-7 at half time. My concern was Llano only had 48 yards of offense in the first half.

The second half started strong. For Comanche. The Indians took the kick off and in 5 plays scored. 21-7. The Jackets settled down a bit. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis handed the ball to Trey Mote 4 times for 17 yards. Luke ran twice for 15 more. And Luke threw to Carter for gains of 14 and the final 13 yards and a TD. 21-14.

But to no avail. Comanche came right back and scored in 4 plays. 28-14. And then scored again early in the fourth quarter. 34-14. Llano just never looked comfortable. Trey scored from three yards out late in the game to close the gap to 34-21.

I’ve said this a hundred times. “There never is a good loss”…I may hedge that statement. I only count three Jackets on offense that you can say are returning starters from last season. The inexperience of game like conditions raised its head in Comanche.

Llano hit everything right against Lytle. Nothing went right for the Pirates. And the scoring was perfect. But when things don’t go right, leadership has to come forward. Leadership was needed Friday night against Comanche. And Llano may not see a quarterback as good until we play Randolph in late October. Llano can play against and beat good players, but they have to be ready from the beginning, and be ready for glitches. And then over come each and every one. Being prepared mentally in a game that you get behind. Be ready for all issues, and over come them. We have some great seniors on this team. Now is the time for all of them to take control of this team, and meet their own expectations.

And Llano gets to greet and old, old foe., Marble Falls. The Jackets last played the Mustangs in 2007, and won 26-14. Marble Falls is a large 4A school, with nearly 1,200 enrollment. We have a lifetime series of 31 Jacket wins, and 20 losses to go with two ties. About 30 years ago, Marble Falls, Burnet, and Lampasas were all in the same district with the Jackets.

The Jackets opportunity here is to regroup, and come out mad as h….! And take it to the Mustangs early. And even if that doesn’t work, be prepared to overcome all obstacles. Be prepared to win. May take all four quarters. But expect to win. And don’t be surprised if it doesn’t come easy. It was once said that successful people are not looking for easy. Llano 31 Marble Falls 16

A new small feature. The Jacket fans that may remember head football Coach Karl McCormack. And while he was a very winning coach in Llano, he may be best remembered as one of the very best defensive coaches Llano has ever had. Only since Llano defensive coordinator Matt Anastasio came to Llano can I say “we have the best”. But Karl collected things. He recorded every bowl game that was on TV for a decade, and then studied them. Everyone. And he collected “locker Room Slogans and Quotes” His words, not mine. 56 pages, single spaced. 1,101 of them. Without Karl’s permission to print a few here every week. And for you that would like a copy of these, come by my office, and I’ll make you a copy. Thank you Karl

Jackets Blank Lytle 47-0

The 2024 version of the fighting Llano Yellow Jackets put a strong statement out to everyone last Friday night. “We’re Llano, and we came to play.”

The Jacket’s first win ever over Lytle was enough for me. But the sound play on offense, defense and special teams proved at least for one week, Llano came prepared. Lytle last season was a good football team. And nearly all of those players returned for their senior season. Many Llano fans were lost without a program for the Jackets. New players, some old veterans, and a Coaching staff still in place.

The Jackets took the opening kick off and drove 13 plays and scored. Just like you do in practice. Senior Trey Mote carried 4 times for 22 yards and two first downs. Junior Brayton Shaw carried 3 times. Sophomore quarterback Luke Davis ran twice. And Luke threw four times with two completions to senior split receiver Carter Bickett and 10 more yards. And then on fourth down, Luke threw a perfect over the shoulder TD pass to Carter and the 19 yard score. Senior Tate Morgan kicked true and Llano lead 7-0 with 7:15 left in the first quarter.

Senior center Stephen Barrack along with seniors Will Landers and Thomas Caldren manned the offensive line. Luke was hardly ever touched all night long. Luke finished the night 12 of 17 and three TD passes. Still in the first quarter, Luke found senior RJ Coplin for a 14 yard completion. And on the next play RJ took an end around hand off and scored from 11 yards out.

The Jackets had about 112 yards of offense in the first quarter. Trey had a 57 yard TD run in the second quarter. Luke completed passes to Heath Rhea for 18 yards and a first down, and another for 27 yards. RJ caught a pass from Luke for 27 yards and another first down. An 8 yard reception by junior Austin Humphries was getting the Jackets close. Junior Konrad Zwicke had several key blocks. Two runs by Trey for 19 yards put Llano on the 15 yard line. Again Luke found Austin for the 15 yard TD pass. Llano lead at halftime 40-0

Oh yea…that 0. Someone showed up for Llano and played defense. Lytle had one drive, the first time they had the ball, and had a 10 play drive. But in that drive, the Jackets threw the Pirates for losses on 3 plays for negative 58 yards! They had 2 first downs, and were forced to punt. Senior linebacker Tate Morgan leads this very good defense. Wesley Whitaker and JD Friday had strong nights. Nose guard Michael Logan was unstoppable. Most of the night Michael was double teamed, but to no avail. Senior Logan Van Pelt had a very good evening. The three down lineman for Llano were a horrible menace to the Pirates. The Jackets held Lytle to 55 total yards for the entire game. 6 times the Jackets forced punts on three downs and out. Twice Lytle went for the first down on fourth down. Both times the likes of Carsten Hayes and Cole Kennedy stopped the runs.

Lytle only had the ball 16 plays in the second half. I think everyone on the Jacket sideline got to play. Youngsters like Ethan Griego, Hayden Scott, Brayden Amidon, Hayden Dean, Zach Driskell, Rice Thomas got valuable snaps. And running backs Cody Greenwood and Isaiah Aguilar carried the ball 17 times in the later part of the game. Sophomore Cash Lynch had two catches. And the leadership of senior Colton Baily while playing awesome in the secondary, came in and played quarterback in the fourth quarter. A great first game win. And we beat Lytle.

So many people have asked ” Is Llano good”? I still don’t know. Lytle just never showed up. Or did the Jacket just play that good? One way to find out. The Jackets travel again this week to Comanche. The Indians were 8-5 last year. Three games deep into the play offs last year. They are in a tough district, along with Jim Ned and Sweetwater.

Somehow, the Comanche all time record got deleted in the record book. But I’ve uncovered a few games. In 1966 Llano beat the Indians 28-0. The last time Llano played Comanche was in 2011, I think. Llano won 36-32. But in 2002, the Indians won 45-27. When time allows, I’ll go back and get it brought up to date. Over all, it has been a hard fought, competitive series.

You can bet that Comanche will be ready for Llano this week. The Indians lost to # 6 ranked Poth last week, but were still ranked above Llano. The young Jackets get the opportunity to get better. Playing a strong play off team from last season is needed. Keeping the penalties at a minimum paid off last week. And no turnovers. Llano gets better. Llano 27 Comanche 12

Young Jackets Ready for Lytle

The 2024 season kicks off this Friday night in Lytle Texas. The Jackets have prepared for 9 long months. Thank goodness there is no more waiting. Let’s see what we have.

While I suggest that Llano is young, that based on experience, and somewhat lack of. The hard work has been put in. The countless hours. The worry of that first game can’t be measured. And with Coach Matt Green and his very experienced coaching staff, the Jackets will be ready.

Since that first season in 2017 that Coach Green came to Llano with a mission in mind. A purpose to fulfill. That since of confidence he gave us all. And his staff has always been so strong. I’ve never doubted our resolve.

In 1965, the Yellow Jackets had a veteran team. Future TCU star Sammy Rabb lead the Jackets from his full back position. Tommy Duncan was at tailback. And Quarterback Butch Stovall was returning having been 2nd team All District his junior year. All three were seniors. Jim Everett, Robert Mosely, Lyndon Lockhart, Mike Livingston, Shorty Lockhart were veteran lineman. All seniors. Expectations were high in Llano Texas for Coach Weldon Seeligers’ team.

The second game of the season, Llano played Round Rock at Round Rock. Early in the game, Butch rolled out to the sideline and was tripped up. He got up slow, got back to the huddle, but never ran another play. What was thought of at the time of being a pulled calf muscle, was much worse. Butch got to the sidelines, and that was the last time we and the team saw of him until the next day in the hospital.

What ever the leg injury was, I don’t know. But days later Butch was taken to a San Antonio hospital where they removed all of the muscle in Butch’s right leg. He never played again.

Dennis Raesener was the sophomore quarterback on that team. Dennis had been the starting quarterback in the 7th, 8th and 9th grade teams. He was a very accurate passer, and in those days, the quarterback called his own plays. Dennis was very smart, and a very cool guy. The situation did not fazz Dennis. That Jacket team finished the season 7-2-1, losing only to Fredericksburg in the last game of the season for the District Crown. Only one team from each district advanced to the state play offs.

Dennis went on the start 28 more games for the Yellow Jackets. His record of 17-10-1 was remarkable. Of the ten games lost…all were to teams that were district champions or co-district champions. 4 loses were to teams that went 10-0 in their regular seasons. Dennis holds the LHS record for most games started by a Llano quarterback. Behind Dennis is the quarterback of the 2007 and 2008 Jackets, Trey Brooks. Trey started 25 games for Llano, and finished with a 17-8 record.

Last year, the Jackets lost all State quarterback Briggs Green before the first game. In stepped Colton Bailey and freshman Luke Davis. Both played well. In fact I thought Colton turned into one of the Jackets best defensive players by the end of the season. Luke continued to improve at quarterback and got much experience. Both players will need every bit of last seasons experience to help beat a very sound Lytle team.

And while Luke and Colton, along with Trey Mote, Brayton Shaw, Konrad Zwicke, RJ Coplin, and Carter Bickett work on fine tuning the skill positions, expect this first game to be controlled on both lines of scrimmage. Seniors Rice Thomas, Stephen Barrack, Will Landers, Thomas Caldron, Marshall Hernandez, Jaxon Johnson, and Isaiah Hernandez must be at top speed. Seniors Michael Logan and Logan Van Pelt along with sophomore Cole Kennedy will man the trenches on the defensive side.

Lytle went two deep into the play offs last season, with 10 offensive and 9 defensive players returning. They have experience. And their confidence of having a record of 2-0 against the Jackets has not hurt that confidence.

Let’s turn that record around. Llano 21 Lytle 13

Jacket Coach Matt Green Enters 8th Season

Llano Yellow Jacket head football coach and Athletic Director Matt Green is entering his eighth year at the helm of the Llano program. Only John Baskin from 1976 thru 1983 held the position as long. Green has lead the Jackets to three District Championships, an 58-26 overall record, and a 10-6 post season record. All school records and counting.

Coach Green’s winning percentage is at .691% Only Llano Coach Ken Gray has equaled the percentage. Gray’s two district championships and over all record of 23-10-1 in three seasons, plus Gray’s 2-2 post season mark places him in the top three all time.

Llano Coach David Yeager was in Llano for 7 years, and had a 43-36 over all record. His 5-5 record in the state play offs was remarkable.

Coach Karl McCormack was head coach for five seasons, and had a 35-22 record. Karl resigned after being told by then Llano School Superintendent Jack Patton that the school board had met, and had decided to fire Karl at their next meeting. Karl, being the stand-up guy that he was, immediately resigned. It was weeks later that Karl found out the school board had never met. I owned the The Llano Buzz at the time, but Karl asked me not to tell the story. Many years later, I called Karl and asked him if it was OK for me to tell Llano what had happened. He agreed. I published the story.

Due to inexperience on both sides of the ball, the Jackets took a small step back, going 5-5 for the season. Last season, the Jackets were expecting to be at the top of the district race. But when returning All State quarterback Briggs Green had a season ending injury the week before the first game, all bets were off. So many great seniors last season all had to be at their best. And for most parts, they were. As mentioned in last weeks article, the games won against Jarrell, Austin Crockett and San Antonio Cole were stunning. But inexperience at most positions raised its ugly head as Llano came into the home stretch.

With strong freshman and sophomore classes now moving towards the varsity level, the Jackets look to be more experienced. Many very good players got invaluable experience last season. And maybe best of all, the expectations will be more sound. These players now have a feeling of what to expect, and be prepared for the unexpected.

Scrimmage at Mason Friday night. Then scrimmage with Brady here at Jacket Stadium the following Thursday. And on August 30th, Llano travels to Lytle, somewhere south of San Antonio. Llano has never beaten Lytle in two games. These young Jackets can start their own legacy on August 30th.
